Meigs County • March 5, 2025
Good morning, Meigs County. Sixty years ago, a young president stood on College Green and dared students to build a "Great Society." Little did those Athens residents know they were witnessing history as LBJ launched what would become 84 transformative bills addressing everything from civil rights to Appalachian highways. That vision of inclusion continues today as Wood County officially recognizes March 2025 as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, celebrating The Arc's remarkable 70-year legacy of supporting hundreds of families annually.
Meanwhile, the "wet bandits" have struck MacKinnon Hall's restrooms - and no, we're not talking about the Home Alone villains. Athens County's police blotter reads like a small-town sitcom script, featuring everything from early morning tree-cutting complaints to social media impersonation reports. Between emergency 911 calls from playful children and residents locked out of their vehicles, our local officers certainly earn their badges handling the colorful tapestry of daily life in southeastern Ohio.

♿ Wood County champions inclusion for people with developmental disabilities. The county commission officially declared March 2025 as National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, recognizing the value and abilities of all community members. Representatives from The Arc of the Mid-Ohio Valley, celebrating its 70th anniversary, emphasized that people with disabilities deserve to live in the community like everyone else. The Arc provides crucial services including early intervention, digital literacy training, and summer recreation programs, impacting hundreds of families annually. In 2024 alone, they served 394 families with Early Intervention and 434 individuals with developmental disabilities through direct service programs.
🚓 Small town police blotter reveals quirky crimes and daily disturbances. Athens County Sheriff's Office responded to a range of minor incidents, including children playing with 911, a credit card dispute, and a person locked out of their vehicle. OUPD reported over $1,000 in restroom vandalism at MacKinnon Hall, dubbing the perpetrators "the wet bandits." Other notable entries included an unregistered dog citation, an early morning tree-cutting complaint, and a woman reporting her ex-girlfriend was impersonating her on social media.
🏛️ LBJ's Great Society vision began at Ohio University in 1964. President Lyndon Johnson unveiled his ambitious plan to combat poverty and racial injustice during a brief visit to Athens, Ohio, where he addressed thousands of students at the College Green. Speaking directly to young Americans, Johnson declared, "America is yours, yours to make a better land, yours to build the Great Society." His vision eventually resulted in 84 bills signed into law, creating programs that improved civil rights, education, healthcare, and infrastructure throughout Appalachia. Sixty years later, many of these initiatives still benefit the region, including highways and education grants.
