Good morning, Marion County. The roads demand our attention this week as a tragic three-vehicle collision at Ohio 13/Ohio 96 claimed the life of a dump truck driver on Friday. The accident, which occurred during a left turn attempt by an 81-year-old minivan driver, serves as a sobering reminder of how quickly circumstances can change behind the wheel. Meanwhile, another form of transportation is creating buzz in Plain City, where police are considering regulations for increasingly popular e-bikes and scooters—not to issue tickets, but to prevent potential safety issues before they arise.

In a bright spot of local achievement, Ohio State University at Marion professors Dr. Ruben Petreaca and Dr. Renee Bouley have secured a $157,500 NIH grant for their groundbreaking cancer research. Their work mapping chromosome break repair could eventually inform future treatment strategies while providing valuable research opportunities for undergraduate students in our community—proving once again that world-changing discoveries often begin close to home.

🚲 E-bikes zoom into Plain City, prompting police to hit the brakes. The local police department is considering implementing regulations for electric bicycles and scooters as their popularity grows in the village. Lieutenant Tom Jaskiewicz emphasized that these potential rules aren't meant to ticket residents but rather to proactively prevent issues. Officials are looking to add parameters similar to those for vehicles like golf carts to ensure safety. The initiative comes as electric recreational vehicles become an increasing concern for local law enforcement.

🔬 OSU professors score $157,500 NIH grant for groundbreaking cancer research. Dr. Ruben Petreaca and Dr. Renee Bouley from Ohio State University at Marion received funding to study chromosome break repair and its connection to cancer development. Their research examines how mutations and chromosomal rearrangements drive cancer progression by mapping patterns in a specific chromatin remodeling complex. While not directly creating therapies, their findings could inform future treatment strategies. The grant also provides valuable research opportunities for undergraduate students and could lead to larger National Cancer Institute funding.
