Good morning, Marion County. The "AI genie" is officially out of the bottle in Ohio classrooms. Columbus schools are racing to create policies for this transformative technology that's reshaping education faster than administrators can type "ChatGPT." As district officials navigate this digital frontier—what board members aptly call the "wild, wild west"—Ohio State University has already declared its intention to make all students AI-fluent starting with the Class of 2029.

Meanwhile, two very different comebacks are making headlines. A federal judge has ordered mediation in the ongoing Ohio State sexual abuse case, just as HBO Max releases "Surviving Ohio State," featuring firsthand accounts from Dr. Strauss's victims. In more uplifting wildlife news, black bears are reclaiming their historic Ohio territory after disappearing in the mid-1800s. Researchers recently collared a female bear in Ashtabula County—the first time this milestone has been achieved in our state.

🤖 Columbus schools scramble to create AI policy as technology reshapes education. The district aims to establish guidelines for appropriate AI use by students and staff, recognizing that the "AI genie" can't be put back in the bottle. Chief Information Officer Christopher Lockhart emphasized the need for anti-cheating measures while ensuring students properly cite AI-generated content. The move follows Ohio State University's announcement to embed AI into its curriculum, making all students "fluent" in the technology starting with the Class of 2029. Board members described the current situation as the "wild, wild west" and are considering either adopting policies from other districts or creating their own flexible approach.

⚖️ Judge orders mediator in Ohio State sexual abuse case. The decision comes one day after HBO Max released "Surviving Ohio State," a documentary featuring firsthand accounts from survivors of Dr. Richard Strauss's abuse. Despite Ohio State's public apologies and millions paid in settlements, hundreds of former athletes continue their legal battle against the university. Many survivors describe feeling trapped, fearing loss of scholarships if they spoke out about unnecessary genital exams and inappropriate behavior. The mediator will be appointed within 30 days as attorneys continue gathering evidence, including from former coach Jim Jordan.

🐻 Black bears are making a comeback in Northeast Ohio. ODNR researchers recently collared a female black bear in Ashtabula County—the first time this has been done in Ohio. This milestone follows multiple bear sightings in Trumbull County this month, including in Lordstown, Howland, and Cortland. Black bears, considered endangered in Ohio after disappearing in the mid-1800s, are naturally returning from neighboring states. Researchers plan to collar 10-20 bears over the coming years to track their habitat use, movement patterns, and reproduction as these magnificent creatures reclaim their historic range.
