Good morning, Marion County. Remember the panda-monium that swept through Columbus in 1992? Nearly a million visitors flocked to the Columbus Zoo when giant pandas Xing Xing and Qin Qin made their four-month appearance. The diplomatic feat required years of negotiation, a $300,000 conservation donation, and Jack Hanna's legendary persistence—proving that bringing these rare treasures to America's heartland was worth every challenge faced.

While we're reminiscing about warm summer memories, Mother Nature seems to have different plans for our current weather. Central Ohio is facing an unseasonably chilly end to May with temperatures hovering 10-20 degrees below normal. But take heart—forecasters predict relief is coming in early June, just in time to celebrate our local academic stars who've been making headlines with impressive achievements at universities across the country, from healthcare degrees to agricultural scholarships.

🐼 Two giant pandas captivated Columbus Zoo visitors in summer 1992. The four-month exhibit featuring three-year-old pandas Xing Xing and Qin Qin attracted nearly a million visitors, but securing their stay required years of diplomatic effort. Zoo Director Jack Hanna and officials navigated relationships with Chinese authorities, overcame a federal moratorium on panda imports, and weathered criticism from wildlife organizations. Despite losing its accreditation for a year and donating $300,000 to conservation, the Columbus Zoo successfully brought these rare animals to America's heartland.

❄️ Central Ohio braces for an unusually chilly end to May. Temperatures will remain 10-20 degrees below normal, with highs primarily in the 60s instead of the typical mid-to-upper 70s. The Climate Prediction Center confirms higher chances for below-normal temperatures through the end of the month. Relief is on the horizon, though, as early June should bring a welcome pattern shift. Forecasters predict temperatures will finally return to normal and even above-normal levels, with highs climbing back into the 70s and 80s.
