🏛️ Timing is everything

Licking County • March 4, 2025

Good morning, Licking County. Just as the historic Newark Arcade perfectly timed its 1909 grand opening to capitalize on thousands of Civil War veterans flooding downtown, timing seems to be everything in our county these days. The beautifully restored arcade stands as a testament to successful revival while Intel's semiconductor facility faces yet another delay, pushing its opening to 2030-31—a stark contrast in development timelines separated by more than a century.

Meanwhile, the local real estate market keeps humming along, with recent property transfers topping $447,000 in Newark alone. From a $415,000 Granville property to a $120,000 Pataskala home, these transactions paint a picture of our diverse housing landscape. As we navigate both our cherished history and uncertain economic future, at least the real estate numbers give us something concrete to hold onto.

☕️ What's Brewing Locally

🏛️ Newark Arcade's 1909 grand opening perfectly timed for business success. The historic shopping center debuted on June 7, 1909, featuring over 20 businesses including clothiers, jewelers, and restaurants. Marsh Orchestra provided daily concerts for visitors throughout opening week. The timing couldn't have been better as thousands of Civil War veterans and their families flooded downtown Newark for an annual encampment beginning June 14. Though experiencing ups and downs over its history, the arcade has been restored by Newark Development Partners to become a downtown jewel.

🏭 Intel delays chip factory again, pushing opening to 2030-31. The semiconductor giant has postponed its $28 billion Licking County, Ohio facility that broke ground in 2022 with initial promises of a 2025 opening. Local officials expressed disappointment but not surprise, with one construction-savvy township trustee noting "there's not even power there yet." Despite the setback, community leaders remain optimistic about the project's eventual completion, viewing it as essential for U.S. manufacturing security. The delay gives local governments more time to prepare infrastructure while some business owners worry about premature economic speculation.
