Jackson County • April 10, 2025

Good morning, Jackson County. When it comes to environmental innovation, our own backyard is leading the charge. Star Plastics has unveiled six new PFAS-free polycarbonate compounds well ahead of industry deadlines, proving that sustainability isn't just a buzzword but a "foundational principle" taking shape right here in West Virginia. This forward-thinking approach stands in stark contrast to the critical decisions facing the Turkey Run Lake Dam, where officials must choose between a $30 million repair project or returning the 60-year-old structure to a natural stream system.

On the fiscal front, Ravenswood's newly approved $4.87 million budget reflects both cautious planning and community priorities. Despite coal severance revenue dropping to just $14,550, the balanced budget maintains funding for essential services while allocating $50,000 each for beloved local traditions like the Ohio River Festival and Harvest in the Wood events—investments in the cultural fabric that makes our community unique even in uncertain economic times.

The West Virginia-based company has launched six new polycarbonate compounds without harmful per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, bringing their PFAS-free lineup to eight products. Four products feature in their reNova® series with 50% preconsumer recycled polycarbonate, while three new offerings join their Orion® engineering resins line. "PFAS free is not just a trend in the industry, it is a foundational principle at Star," explains development manager James Holland, highlighting the company's commitment to providing environmentally safer alternatives before the industry's 2025-2026 phase-out deadlines.

💰 Ravenswood approves $4.87 million budget with slight increase. The city council's fiscal year 2025-2026 budget reflects a modest $9,259 rise from the current year, despite coal severance revenue dropping to $14,550. Mayor Josh Miller noted the unassigned balance projection decreased from $1.25 million to $650,000, largely due to playground and park upgrades in previous years. Key allocations include $1.17 million for police, $120,000 for the volunteer fire department, and $50,000 each for the Ohio River Festival and Harvest in the Wood events. The balanced budget maintains funding for essential services while taking a conservative approach amid uncertain economic conditions.

🌊 Turkey Run Lake Dam faces critical safety compliance decisions. The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources will host a public meeting on April 17 in Ravenswood to gather feedback on two proposed solutions for the potentially unsafe dam. One $30 million option would repair the existing structure but cause years of disruption, while the alternative would remove the dam to create a natural stream system with enhanced recreational features. The 15-acre impoundment, built in 1964, currently provides fishing opportunities but fails to meet state safety regulations during high precipitation events. Public comments can be submitted until May 2 through an online portal for those unable to attend.
