📚 Spelling superstar

Jackson County • March 3, 2025

Good morning, Jackson County. A single word—"loquacious"—might separate spelling bee champions from the rest of us, but ten-year-old Joseph Keffer has mastered far more than vocabulary. The Chesapeake Middle School fifth grader just conquered the regional Scripps National Spelling Bee, earning a ticket to Washington D.C. where he'll represent all of Southeast Ohio on the national stage. His confidence even extended to correcting pronunciations, showing that sometimes the mightiest voices come in the smallest packages.

Musical excellence continues to flow from Jackson County roots as Ripley High graduate Alyssa Bumpus leads her Blennerhassett Middle School band to state honors after just two years at the helm. While her students prepare for their prestigious Charleston performance, OhioHealth O'Bleness Hospital is offering another type of life-changing opportunity—free lung cancer screenings on March 1st for eligible residents, proving that in our community, both artistic achievement and health initiatives strike harmonious notes.

🔤 Ten-year-old Joseph Keffer conquers regional spelling bee in Ohio. The fifth grader from Chesapeake Middle School emerged victorious among thirteen students representing seven Southeast Ohio counties at OU's Scripps National Spelling Bee Regional Competition. Keffer, who impressed by even correcting a pronunciation, will represent Southeast Ohio at the National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. this May. The competition, hosted for the first time by Ohio University, was a partnership between the Patton College of Education and E.W. Scripps School of Journalism. Beyond spelling prowess, participants gained valuable experience in public speaking, confidence, and performing under pressure.

🎵 Ripley High grad's middle school band earns prestigious state honor. Alyssa Bumpus, a 2016 Ripley graduate, led the Blennerhassett Middle School Symphonic Band to being named the 2025 WVMEA State Honor Ensemble in just her second year as director. The band impressed judges with three distinct pieces: Byzantine Dances, Shenandoah, and Valley Forge March, showcasing the students' dedication and musical talents. Bumpus credits her own Jackson County music mentors—Sherry Poole, Jeanette Bowlby, and Radonna Hess—for shaping her teaching philosophy of caring deeply for students. The band will perform at the WVMEA conference on March 7 at the Charleston Civic Center, free and open to the public.
