
🔤 Ten-year-old Joseph Keffer conquers regional spelling bee in Ohio. The fifth grader from Chesapeake Middle School emerged victorious among thirteen students representing seven Southeast Ohio counties at OU's Scripps National Spelling Bee Regional Competition. Keffer, who impressed by even correcting a pronunciation, will represent Southeast Ohio at the National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. this May. The competition, hosted for the first time by Ohio University, was a partnership between the Patton College of Education and E.W. Scripps School of Journalism. Beyond spelling prowess, participants gained valuable experience in public speaking, confidence, and performing under pressure.

🎵 Ripley High grad's middle school band earns prestigious state honor. Alyssa Bumpus, a 2016 Ripley graduate, led the Blennerhassett Middle School Symphonic Band to being named the 2025 WVMEA State Honor Ensemble in just her second year as director. The band impressed judges with three distinct pieces: Byzantine Dances, Shenandoah, and Valley Forge March, showcasing the students' dedication and musical talents. Bumpus credits her own Jackson County music mentors—Sherry Poole, Jeanette Bowlby, and Radonna Hess—for shaping her teaching philosophy of caring deeply for students. The band will perform at the WVMEA conference on March 7 at the Charleston Civic Center, free and open to the public.
