Jackson County • February 12, 2025
Good morning, Jackson County. Hidden among our southeast Ohio forests stand the pyramids of the Industrial Revolution - not built by ancient pharaohs, but by iron workers who helped forge America's destiny. More than 60 iron furnaces once transformed our landscape into a bustling industrial powerhouse, though today their scattered ruins tell silent stories of boom towns and depleted forests. The Southeast Ohio History Center is bringing these forgotten giants back to life through their fascinating speaker series.
While we explore our region's industrial heritage, we're also saying goodbye to one of Wellston's finest, Harry Downard, whose legacy of community service and joy for life enriched us all. And for those keeping track of more practical matters, property tax season has arrived - though thankfully, Treasurer Hubbard's office has made paying about as easy as streaming your favorite show.

π Ancient iron furnaces reveal Ohio's forgotten industrial might. More than 60 iron furnaces once dotted Southeast Ohio's Hanging Rock Region, transforming the landscape between the Ohio River and Hocking County. The Southeast Ohio History Center is highlighting this industrial heritage through their Lyceum Luncheon Speaker Series, featuring Tom O'Grady's presentation "Stone Pyramids of Southeast Ohio Forests." These furnaces, which helped build America, spawned small towns while depleting local forests. Today, only scattered remnants like the Hope Furnace at Lake Hope State Park survive to tell their story.
π Beloved community leader Harry Downard leaves lasting legacy in Wellston, Ohio. The 83-year-old former McNally-Pittsburg Manufacturing employee and city worker passed away peacefully at home on February 4, 2025. During his 25-year career, Downard helped pioneer Wellston's recycling program and remained active in his church for over four decades. A passionate bowler and square dancer, he spent his later years cheering on his favorite sports teams and cherishing time with his great-grandsons. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Mary, along with children, grandchildren, and extended family.
