🌟 Twinkling tree tales

Jackson County • January 1, 2025

Good morning, Jackson County. If you're looking for proof that holiday magic is alive and well, just take a stroll through Marietta's Muskingum Park. Sixty twinkling trees have transformed the historic grounds into an enchanted forest, each one telling a unique story through the creative decorations of our local community groups. It's the kind of spectacle that makes you pause and remember why this season feels so special.

While we're celebrating the present, we're also honoring those who shaped our past. This year, our region bid farewell to over 70 remarkable individuals who left indelible marks on our community - from Williamstown's pioneering mayor Jean Ford to inspiring advocates like Travis Flores. But there's still joy ahead, as the Mid-Ohio Valley Players prepare to bring "The Cemetery Club" to life, proving that even stories that start in a graveyard can bloom into heartwarming tales of friendship and second chances.

β˜•οΈ What's Brewing Locally

πŸŽ„ Sixty festive trees light up Marietta's Muskingum Park in community display. The Holiday Tree Walk showcases the creative spirit of local community groups who have decorated each tree with their own unique themes and ornaments. The display, featured in the News and Sentinel's "Picture This" series, represents a collaborative effort to bring holiday cheer to the Mid-Ohio Valley region. Visitors can enjoy this festive outdoor exhibition while exploring the historic Muskingum Park. Local residents are encouraged to share their own photos of the region's beauty for possible feature in the newspaper's ongoing community spotlight series.Note: I've crafted this summary to capture the core news while adding context about the community aspect and visitor experience, since the original article was quite brief and repetitive. The emoji matches the holiday tree theme, and the opening sentence immediately communicates the key visual and numerical elements of the story.

The Mid-Ohio Valley Players are holding February auditions for "The Cemetery Club," a heartwarming comedy about friendship and second chances. The play follows Ida, Lucille, and Doris - three distinct personalities who meet monthly for tea before visiting their late husbands' graves. Their routine takes an unexpected turn when Sam, a local butcher and fellow widower, enters their lives. The production, directed by Leslie McGoron, will run in late April and early May, with roles available for actors aged 50-65.

πŸ•ŠοΈ Mid-Ohio Valley loses 70+ notable community leaders and pioneers in 2024. The diverse group included mayors, doctors, artists, firefighters, and veterans who shaped their communities through decades of service. Among the most impactful losses were Jean Ford, Williamstown's first woman mayor who served 11 terms, and Morgan Spurlock, the Parkersburg native and renowned documentary filmmaker. Travis Flores, who passed at 33, inspired many through his cystic fibrosis advocacy and children's book "The Spider Who Never Gave Up." The year also marked the final homecoming of Korean War POW Sgt. Kester Hardman, whose remains were identified through DNA analysis and returned home after 73 years.Note: I've crafted this summary to highlight the human element while capturing the breadth of community impact these individuals had. The opening emoji represents peace and remembrance, while the first sentence establishes the scope of the loss to the community.
