Hocking County • October 23, 2025
Good morning, Hocking County. From the whisper of an arrow's flight to the patter of paws on prison floors, remarkable journeys are unfolding across Ohio this week. Sixteen veterans recently experienced the camaraderie of a special guided hunt in Zaleski State Forest, where eleven deer were harvested during a two-day event that provided much more than just huntingโit offered healing, connection, and meaningful outdoor experiences for those who've served our nation.
Meanwhile, tails are wagging as Labrador mixes "Lancaster" and "Mojo" celebrated their graduation from Southeastern Correctional Institution's training program, demonstrating impressive skills before moving on to specialized service dog training. Their success story parallels that of Sarah Howard, who recently completed all 1,444 miles of Ohio's Buckeye Trailโa five-year journey that reminds us all that persistence, whether on four paws or two feet, leads to remarkable achievements.

๐น Ohio veterans enjoy special archery hunt in Zaleski State Forest. Sixteen veterans participated in a free guided deer hunt organized by ODNR and the Buckeye Hero Hunt Committee this October. The two-day event resulted in eleven deer harvested while volunteers provided meals, lodging, and equipment for participants. "We are honored to provide meaningful opportunities for those who have sacrificed so much for our nation," said ODNR Division of Forestry Chief Dan Balser. The hunt not only created memorable experiences for veterans but also helped manage forest damage caused by white-tailed deer populations.
๐ Prison pups graduate to brighter futures beyond bars. Two Labrador mix dogs, "Lancaster" and "Mojo," celebrated their graduation from a year-long training program at Southeastern Correctional Institution in Ohio. The ceremony, held on October 20, 2025, marked the completion of their initial training with inmate handlers Brian Tevis and Michael Patterson. Both dogs demonstrated impressive skills during the event, including commands that will serve them well as they advance to more specialized service dog training through the Canine Companions program. Their journey represents a unique partnership between corrections and canine service organizations.
๐ฅพ Five years and 1,444 miles later, Sarah Howard completed Ohio's Buckeye Trail. The 46-year-old Waynesville resident became one of only about 200 hikers to section-hike the entire trail, finishing her journey at Headlands Beach State Park. Howard, who began as a park ranger at Caesar Creek State Park in 2020, tackled the trail in sections ranging from 10-20 miles, persisting through extreme weather conditions. Though she hiked some portions alone, she shared much of the experience with a community of 25-30 fellow hikers, citing the trail community as what she'll miss most about the journey.
