From humble log cabin beginnings to Thursday's centennial ceremony complete with a new clock unveiling and community cookout, this architectural landmark continues to serve as the beating heart of county governance while connecting generations of residents through shared heritage.
Community engagement opportunities abound this month with Cora Kilcoyne joining the Board of Developmental Disabilities, recycling days scheduled in Laurelville and Union Furnace, and Senator Wilkin hosting a Lake Logan dredging discussion. Meanwhile, New Lexington embraced the patriotic spirit with its inaugural Firecracker 5K, where 37 participants of all ages kicked off Fourth of July celebrations. 🏛️ Historic courthouse turns 100 with community celebration. The Hocking County Courthouse in Logan marked its centennial anniversary on Thursday with a special ceremony. Commissioner Jason D'Onofrio highlighted the building's evolution from the county's early days as a log cabin to the current structure completed in 1925. Officials unveiled a new clock above the courthouse doors and held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to commemorate the occasion. Following formal festivities, visitors enjoyed a community cookout featuring hot dogs, burgers and bratwurst on the courthouse grounds.
📢 Hocking County announces three key community updates this week. The Board of Developmental Disabilities welcomes new volunteer member Cora Kilcoyne, a Logan resident who grew up in the Lancaster and Sugar Grove area. Recycling Days have been scheduled for July 26 at Laurelville ball fields and August 2 in Union Furnace/Starr Township. State Senator Shane Wilkin will host a meeting on July 22 to discuss partnerships with property owners who could provide land for Lake Logan dredge material reuse sites. All three announcements offer residents opportunities to learn more in upcoming newspaper sections.
🏃♀️ New Lexington's first Firecracker 5K kicks off Fourth of July celebrations. The race began at 9 a.m. Friday at New Lexington Park, drawing 37 participants of all ages. Organizers expressed gratitude to local police, city employees, fire department, and volunteers who helped make the inaugural event successful. Winners were crowned in four categories: Brooke Cochran (18+ Female), Nathan Fisher (18+ Male), Willa Gutridge (17 & under female), and Tristan Fulk (17 & under male). Special thanks went to Heather Kunkler who created the event's t-shirts.
