Hocking County • June 11, 2025
Good morning, Hocking County. Summer road warriors in neighboring Perry County are facing a maze of detours as ODOT launches multiple culvert replacement projects. Six different state routes will see closures throughout June and July, particularly affecting those traveling near New Straitsville and Crooksville. While planning alternative routes might be frustrating, at least these infrastructure improvements aren't happening during the school year rush.
The community spirit that defines our region was on full display Tuesday morning when seven fire departments rallied to save a beloved New Lexington restaurant. The Pizza Place on Broadway suffered primarily kitchen damage thanks to the rapid response that contained the blaze within minutes. Meanwhile, Nelsonville faces an unusual governmental puzzle with its "December problem" โ needing to find temporary council members to bridge a one-month gap when only a single official will remain to keep city operations functioning.

๐ง Perry County drivers face multiple road closures this summer. The Ohio Department of Transportation announced several culvert replacement projects that will temporarily shut down roads in June and July. Closures will affect six different state routes including Ohio 312, 155, 595, 216, 13, and 669. All projects will operate between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m., with some lasting multiple days. Drivers should plan alternate routes, especially those traveling near New Straitsville, Crooksville, and other affected areas.
๐ฅ Quick action saves beloved New Lexington restaurant from disaster. Firefighters rapidly contained a Tuesday morning blaze at the Pizza Place and Restaurant on Broadway Street, limiting damage primarily to the kitchen area. The fire broke out at 9:24 a.m. while staff were setting up for the day, with New Lexington Fire Department arriving within eight minutes. Seven neighboring fire departments provided mutual aid, helping minimize smoke and water damage to the rest of the building. One worker was checked for smoke inhalation but didn't require hospitalization.
๐๏ธ Nelsonville faces a December council crisis with only one member. A citizens committee is recommending a solution by seeking candidates for one-month terms on the City Council. The "December problem" stems from a ballot initiative that abolishes the city's charter government, leaving a gap between current terms ending November 30 and the new government starting January 1. The council needs four members to function, making this solution the "least-bad" option according to committee chair Reid Courtney. If no candidates emerge, a backup plan would allow the lone remaining council member to appoint others.
