Hocking County • April 23, 2025
Good morning, Hocking County. Mother Nature delivered a gentle reminder yesterday that the ground beneath our feet isn't always as solid as we think. A 3.1-magnitude earthquake jolted Southeast Ohio near Senecaville Lake, joining more than 30 tremors that have shaken the state this year. While most residents merely felt a light rumble before returning to their morning coffee, it's a fascinating glimpse into Ohio's surprisingly active geological personality.
Meanwhile, the Wayne National Forest drilling debate has reached a new chapter as federal officials begin accepting fracking applications after completing environmental assessments. On a lighter note, the halls of Berne Union High School are alive with the sound of music—or perhaps the snap of fingers—as students prepare to stage "The Addams Family" musical, breaking a 30-year drought of theatrical productions. They're creepy and they're kooky, and they'll be on stage April 25-27.

🌋 Southeast Ohio jolted by early morning earthquake Tuesday. The 3.1-magnitude tremor struck just east of Zanesville near Senecaville Lake around 4 a.m., with a depth of about 3.1 miles. Residents reported feeling light shaking, though earthquakes of this magnitude are generally considered weak according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Ohio has experienced more than 30 earthquakes so far this year, as tracked by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. The latest quake data can be found on the ODNR website.
🌳 Federal officials green-light drilling applications in Ohio's only national forest. The Bureau of Land Management is now accepting fracking applications for Wayne National Forest after completing a new environmental assessment. This move follows years of legal battles, including a 2021 court ruling that blocked new leases due to inadequate environmental impact studies. Industry representatives welcome the decision while environmental groups like the Center for Biological Diversity call the assessment "a joke" and vow to continue fighting. The controversial decision affects 65 existing leases and could open 40,000 acres of federal mineral estate to new oil and gas development.
🎭 The Addams Family comes alive at Berne Union after 30-year musical drought. The high school theater program will present its first full-length musical production since 1990 with three performances on April 25-27. The comedic show follows Wednesday Addams falling in love with a "normal" boy, leading to a chaotic family dinner when worlds collide. Starring Will Venrick as Gomez and Emma Matthewson as Morticia, the production involves 31 students as cast and crew. Co-directors Noah and Abigail Ott call it a "labor of love" that has united students, parents and the Sugar Grove community.
