🎵 Retro relief

Hocking County • April 2, 2025

Good morning, Hocking County. The stark reality of food insecurity is hitting close to home as federal cutbacks eliminate 162,000 pounds of crucial supplies from the Southeast Ohio Foodbank. These canceled shipments—primarily high-protein items like eggs, cheese, and chicken—come at a particularly challenging time when nearly a third of Ohio's population qualifies for food bank assistance, and additional state-level cuts loom on the horizon.

On a brighter note, the historic streets of Glouster will be swinging to retro tunes this Friday as the Ames-Bern Ridge Rounders perform at Sedalia Crossing Park. And for pet owners concerned about the feline population, affordable spay/neuter clinics are coming to Logan this April, with registration opening April 5 at the fairgrounds. These $50-80 procedures include rabies vaccinations—a small price to pay for addressing pet overpopulation while keeping our furry friends healthy.

🍽️ Federal cutbacks leave thousands of Ohio families with empty plates. The Trump administration canceled $500 million in food shipments to banks nationwide, eliminating 162,000 pounds of crucial supplies for Southeast Ohio Foodbank. High-protein items like eggs, cheese, and chicken—"center of the plate" foods—won't reach families already struggling with inflation and tough financial choices. The cancellation comes as Ohio's governor proposes an additional $15 million state-level cut to food banks, potentially reducing their inventories by another 5%. About 30% of Ohio's population qualifies for food bank services.
