🔥 Community crossroads

Good morning, Hamilton County. Twenty years ago, Cincinnati forged a landmark police-community agreement that became a national model for addressing racial profiling. Today, that once-celebrated Collaborative Agreement appears to be unraveling amid controversy surrounding consultant Iris Roley, whose alleged interference with police work has raised eyebrows about oversight and influence within the department. Meanwhile, a different kind of Cincinnati milestone emerged this week as local entrepreneur Chris Bergman's six-year gaming project finally hit screens—with his company Gylee Games launching "Ra Ra Boom" across major platforms.

While some Hamilton County residents celebrate new beginnings, others face difficult rebuilding after an early Wednesday morning kitchen fire on Allendale Drive displaced five adults from four families. The $90,000 blaze, which firefighters contained within six minutes despite flames spreading to the second floor and attic, sent one person to UC Medical Center with non-life-threatening smoke inhalation. Cincinnati Red Cross has stepped in to assist the affected families with temporary shelter.

The 20-year-old Collaborative Agreement, once a landmark pact addressing police-community relations and racial profiling, appears to be fading away. Key violence reduction programs have "evolved" or disappeared, while official websites show little current activity related to the agreement. The opinion writer suggests bringing in an independent authority to assess the situation and advise city leadership on solutions.
