Hamilton County • June 3, 2025
Good morning, Hamilton County. From Cincinnati to Cape Town, the power of community connection is making waves. For a decade, UC students have been transforming South African businesses through virtual collaborations and in-person workshops, helping 67 entrepreneurs in Khayelitsha township develop marketing strategies where unemployment rates rank among the world's highest. This inspiring cross-continental partnership has even sparked alumni to launch Uhambo 8286, a nonprofit continuing this impactful bridge between cultures.
Closer to home, the spirit of service was celebrated at the 10th annual Spencer awards, where five local organizations were recognized for their community contributions before a crowd of nearly 400. The event honored the legacy of civil rights pioneer Marian Spencer, whose scholarship program now provides full UC education for Cincinnati Public Schools graduates. Meanwhile, a different kind of community support mobilized Monday morning when the Red Cross stepped in to assist ten people—including six children—displaced by a $75,000 house fire on Whitewood Lane.

🌍 UC students transform South African businesses through decade-long program. For ten years, University of Cincinnati students have partnered with entrepreneurs in Khayelitsha township to develop marketing strategies and branding materials. The program connects business and design students with small business owners in post-apartheid South Africa, where unemployment rates remain among the world's highest. Students work virtually throughout the semester before traveling to Cape Town for 10 days of in-person workshops, creating lasting relationships and measurable business growth. The initiative has helped 67 entrepreneurs since 2016 and inspired alumni to launch Uhambo 8286, a nonprofit continuing this impactful work.
