Hamilton County • May 12, 2025
Good morning, Hamilton County. When it comes to saving lives, our community isn't waiting for someone else to take action. The Purple People Bridge is being transformed this week with 5,000 suicide prevention signs, offering hope and resources to those in crisis. This powerful initiative coincides with Mental Health Awareness Month and demonstrates how small gestures can make monumental differences in moments when people need them most.
Meanwhile, Ohioans could soon see financial barriers to critical breast cancer screenings eliminated through the proposed BEST Act, building on previous legislation to ensure no one chooses between financial stability and potentially life-saving care. And in Over-the-Rhine, shovels are hitting the ground on the $46 million Findlay Community Center—the first phase of a massive $100 million transformation that promises to reshape northern OTR for generations to come.

🌉 Purple People Bridge unveils suicide prevention signs to save lives. The initiative, part of Mental Health Awareness Month, features 5,000 free signs donated by Brandon Saho's organization The Mental Game. Placed along the bridge starting May 14, the signs offer encouraging messages and resources for individuals in crisis. "Our goal is to save lives and let anyone walking on this bridge know that it's ok to ask for help," said Saho, who launched the campaign near his hometown of Cincinnati. Community members are invited to attend the unveiling ceremony and learn how to order signs for their own communities.
🎗️ Ohio aims to eliminate costs for critical breast cancer screenings. A new bill in the Ohio legislature, the Breast Examination and Screening Transformation (BEST) Act, seeks to remove all out-of-pocket expenses for supplemental breast cancer screenings. The legislation builds upon House Bill 371, passed in 2022, which required insurance coverage for additional screenings for high-risk individuals or those with dense breast tissue. UC Cancer Center's Ann Brown emphasized that no one should have to choose between paying their mortgage or cancer detection. Breast cancer survivor Michele Young added that the bill would give every woman in Ohio access to life-saving screenings regardless of financial concerns.
🏗️ Cincinnati's $100M transformation of OTR begins with community center. The city of Cincinnati, Cincinnati Recreation Commission, and 3CDC have broken ground on the $46 million Findlay Community Center, marking the start of a strategic overhaul for northern Over-the-Rhine. This project represents the first phase of a larger $100 million investment in the neighborhood. Project partners, including Mayor Aftab Pureval and City Manager Sheryl Long, gathered for the groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate this significant step in urban development.
