Hamilton County • April 9, 2025
Good morning, Hamilton County. Mark your calendars for April 11, 2025, when MOTR Pub transforms into an acoustic haven for UMIN's free Unplugged Happy Hour. This all-ages event (until 8PM) continues Over The Rhine's tradition of nurturing Cincinnati's original music scene, offering intimate experimental sounds in the heart of Main Street—proof that our local cultural landscape continues to evolve in accessible, community-centered ways.
While music fills the air, achievement will take center stage at the Business Courier's 21st annual Fast 55 awards. The May 20th ceremony at Hyatt Regency Cincinnati will honor our region's fastest-growing companies, including household names like FC Cincinnati and Rumpke. Meanwhile, architectural detectives might appreciate a look upward at our historic buildings, where only brackets remain of the canvas awnings that once cooled Cincinnati homes by 15 degrees without electricity—a vanished sustainable solution from our city's innovative past.

The event at Hyatt Regency Cincinnati will celebrate 55 honorees including FC Cincinnati, Rumpke Waste & Recycling, and Kona Ice. 🏠 Cincinnati's historic awnings have mysteriously vanished from urban landscapes. Once a common sight on pre-war buildings, these canvas coverings could lower indoor temperatures by up to 15 degrees without electricity. Homeowners would install them each spring and remove them for winter storage, creating a seasonal rhythm that complemented other passive cooling features like high ceilings and transom windows. Post-WWII suburban developments abandoned these energy-efficient designs in favor of air conditioning, though awnings briefly resurged during the 1970s energy crisis. Today, only mounting brackets remain as reminders of this lost architectural wisdom.
Indian Hill's pitching staff brought the heat in an 11-0 shutout of Reading, serving up a baseball clinic that the Blue Devils won't soon forget. The Braves improved to 2-1 with the dominant league win, flexing their muscles before they head to Ryle for a non-league showdown Tuesday. These teams will get reacquainted Wednesday when Reading hosts a rematch, though the Blue Devils might want to invest in some batting practice before then.

The teams will run it back on Wednesday when the Braves look to even the score in what's quickly becoming a heated local rivalry.Meanwhile, Madeira's MUSTANGS/AMAZONS made short work of Mariemont in a lopsided 20-1 victory that had fans checking their calendars to make sure it wasn't actually batting practice. The Warriors will get their shot at redemption Wednesday, though they'll need to find some serious offensive firepower if they hope to avoid another mercy rule situation.
