🏫 Montessori pioneers

Hamilton County • April 1, 2025

Good morning, Hamilton County. For six decades, Cincinnati has quietly shaped the educational landscape of America through Montessori innovation. What began with Hilda Rothschild's pioneering preschool in 1962 blossomed into a remarkable legacy that includes the nation's first public Montessori school, first Montessori teacher training program, and first public Montessori high school. This educational trailblazing represents Cincinnati's long tradition of breaking new ground while building community—a theme that continues today as the Archdiocese and Braver Angels prepare to tackle America's growing political divide through their upcoming "Polarization Impact Seminar."

On the more immediate horizon, Tuesday brings practical challenges for commuters as maintenance work reduces the Clay Wade Bailey Bridge to a single northbound lane from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Pedestrians will need to detour to the historic Roebling Suspension Bridge while crews use a specialized "snooper vehicle" to access the bridge piers. The good news? Normal traffic flow should resume by Tuesday afternoon—just in time for your evening commute.

🕊️ Catholics tackle America's growing divide in upcoming seminar. The Archdiocese of Cincinnati and Braver Angels will host a "Polarization Impact Seminar" on April 3 at St. Charles Center in Mercer County. The free event will explore how political divisions have intensified over the past 40 years and examine their root causes. Participants will discuss how people of faith can help reduce polarization in their communities and the nation. Braver Angels aims not to change people's views on issues, but to foster mutual respect and civic friendship across political differences.

🚧 Kentucky bridge lane closure will disrupt traffic Tuesday. The Clay Wade Bailey Bridge will undergo maintenance requiring a single northbound lane closure from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on April 1. The sidewalk on the east portion will also be closed, with pedestrians advised to use the John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge instead. These closures will create a safe area for a bridge snooper vehicle to access the piers. The maintenance project is expected to be completed by Tuesday afternoon.

🏫 Cincinnati pioneered Montessori education in America for over 60 years. The city's Montessori journey began in 1962 when Hilda Rothschild opened the Midwest's first Montessori preschool at Cincinnati Country Day School. In 1965, Xavier University established the nation's first Montessori teacher training program, while Cincinnati Public Schools made history in 1975 with Sands Montessori, America's first public Montessori school. The city continued breaking ground in 1997 with Clark Montessori, the first public Montessori high school in the country, and recently adopted American Montessori Society certification for its seven public Montessori schools.
