Geauga County • July 31, 2025
Good morning, Geauga County. Even the most well-intentioned celebrations sometimes fail to stay afloat. The "Parade in the Port" boat event honoring two historic lighthouses has been canceled despite multiple attempts to reschedule, though the 200th anniversary of the original Fairport Harbor Lighthouse was still commemorated with a gala earlier this summer. For those seeking maritime history, the marine museum and rebuilt lighthouse remain open several days a week for visitors.
On a brighter note, the Geauga League of Women Voters is experiencing significant growth, celebrating increased membership and successful civic initiatives at their recent annual meeting. Meanwhile, food lovers are feeling the heat in a different way as beloved Flour Restaurant in Moreland Hills has temporarily closed following a kitchen fire. Thankfully, no injuries were reported, and management is currently assessing when this local culinary staple might reopen its doors.

๐ข Historic lighthouse parade sinks due to lack of interest. The Fairport Harbor Historical Society canceled the "Parade in the Port" boat event that would have celebrated two significant lighthouse anniversaries in Lake County, Ohio. Originally scheduled for June and postponed multiple times, the parade was meant to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the original Fairport Harbor Lighthouse and the 100th anniversary of the Fairport Harbor West Breakwater Lighthouse. Despite the parade's cancellation, the society celebrated with a 200th anniversary gala earlier this summer honoring the original lighthouse built in 1825. The marine museum and rebuilt 60-foot lighthouse remain open to visitors Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
๐ณ๏ธ Geauga League of Women Voters celebrates growth and civic impact. The organization kicked off its new fiscal year following a successful annual meeting on June 26, highlighting increased membership and nonpartisan voter education initiatives. LWVG President Carol Benton expressed excitement about new opportunities ahead for the league. Strong community support, including the Democracy by Design art fundraiser, is helping the organization expand its reach throughout Geauga County. The meeting also featured the presentation of the inaugural Rosemary Balazs Volunteer of the Year Award.
