Good morning, Geauga County. Summer gatherings took a jarring turn this weekend when gunshots disrupted a Painesville neighborhood cookout, sending residents like Shannon Coss scrambling for safety as vehicles sped away from the scene. While police have assured there's no ongoing threat, the incident serves as a stark reminder of how quickly peaceful community moments can be shattered — though officials have clarified this was entirely unrelated to the Spring Block Party festivities on Main Street.

In a dramatic turn of events on I-271, a midnight collision ended with a Euclid woman's SUV rolling multiple times after rear-ending a semi-truck, resulting in OVI charges despite her refusal of a breath test. Meanwhile, Kirtland homeowners received welcome financial relief when county officials slashed mandatory sewer assessment costs from a potential $28,500 down to just $4,573.58 per unit — a victory made possible by $1.1 million in additional funding commitments from local governments.

🚽 Kirtland residents catch major break on mandated sewer costs. Lake County officials announced a final assessment of $4,573.58 per unit for properties affected by the state-mandated Old Town sewer installation project, dramatically reduced from the potential $28,500 cost. County commissioners committed an additional $1 million to lower costs, while Kirtland added $100,000 to further reduce the financial burden on residents. Affected homeowners will receive letters in June giving them 30 days to pay in full or partially, with unpaid amounts added to property taxes over 20 years. Additional funding assistance is available for tap-in fees and lateral connection costs for those meeting income requirements.
