πŸ“ Retail ruckus

Geauga County • February 14, 2025

Good morning, Geauga County. They say crime doesn't pay, but someone nearly made off with $8,427 in electronics from a local Walmart using nothing but quick talk and clever keystrokes. The brazen "cash-cash" scam highlights a growing trend of high-tech hustles hitting our retail stores, with a copycat attempt following just 24 hours later.

Meanwhile, the retail landscape is shifting in more legitimate ways too. Pinecrest, our upscale neighbor in Orange Village, just changed hands for a cool $167 million as North Carolina's Tanger Outlets expands its premium portfolio. And speaking of retail chess moves, Dollar General's latest attempt to plant roots in Willoughby Hills has been checked by the local Planning Commission - proving that even retail giants don't always get their way in our neck of the woods.

πŸ’³ Walmart scammer tricks cashier, walks away with $8,427 in electronics. A crafty thief executed the "cash-cash" scam at a South Euclid Walmart, manipulating the payment system to generate false credit card receipts. The scam involves either distracting cashiers or instructing them to press specific register keys, making transactions appear legitimate when no payment occurs. Walmart reports this is a known scheme affecting multiple locations. Just one day later, a 27-year-old Euclid man was caught attempting the same scam with a fake credit card for $1,447 worth of merchandise.

🏬 North Carolina retail giant snaps up Cleveland's Pinecrest for $167 million. Tanger, a major shopping center operator, acquired the 640,000-square-foot mixed-use lifestyle center in Orange Village, marking its third full-price retail acquisition. The property, which opened in 2018, features premium retailers like Whole Foods Market, REI, and Nike, along with entertainment venues and residential spaces. Previously owned by a New York lender following a pandemic-era foreclosure, Pinecrest is expected to deliver an 8% return in its first year under Tanger's management. The acquisition strengthens Tanger's presence in upscale retail markets, particularly serving Cleveland's affluent eastern suburbs.

πŸͺ Dollar General's expansion plans hit a wall in Willoughby Hills. The city's Planning Commission denied the retail chain's request for preliminary approval on their proposed Chardon Road project, marking the third unsuccessful meeting with Dollar General representatives. The proposed location would have been situated just east of Fowler Road, according to Mayor Chris Hallum. The decision reflects ongoing tensions between national retail chains and local planning commissions over commercial development in residential areas.
