Gallia County • October 22, 2025
Good morning, Gallia County. In the world of outdoor achievements, fewer than 200 people have completed what Sarah Howard just conquered after five years of determination—Ohio's 1,444-mile Buckeye Trail. The Waynesville resident's remarkable journey through extreme weather and challenging terrain places her in an elite club where fewer than 30 have completed the trail in a single thru-hike, marked by those distinctive blue blazes that guide adventurers through our state's diverse landscapes.
While Howard celebrates her trail triumph, Gallia County prepares to honor those who've shown different kinds of courage. Vietnam veteran Gary Fenderbosch, whose helicopter service earned him two Bronze Stars and 32 Air Medals, will receive Rio Grande's prestigious Jim Marshall Veteran of the Year Award on October 25. Meanwhile, Meigs County's Cribs for Kids program is tackling infant mortality by providing free portable cribs and vital safe sleep education to families in need—proving that sometimes the most important journeys begin with the smallest steps.

🥾 Hiker conquers Ohio's longest trail, joining elite 200-member club. Sarah Howard recently completed her five-year section hike of the 1,444-mile Buckeye Trail, finishing at Headlands Beach State Park. The 46-year-old Waynesville resident tackled the trail in sections, sometimes hiking with companions from the supportive trail community that she'll miss most. Howard persevered through extreme weather conditions, maintaining her goal-oriented mindset throughout the journey. She encourages others to try the trail, which is marked by blue blazes and has been fully completed by fewer than 30 people in a single thru-hike.
🎖️ Vietnam veteran Gary Fenderbosch to receive prestigious honor at Rio Grande. The University of Rio Grande will host its ninth annual Honor the Veterans Night on October 25, recognizing Fenderbosch with the 2025 Jim Marshall Veteran of the Year Award. The decorated Army sergeant earned two Bronze Stars and 32 Air Medals during his service as a helicopter crew chief in Vietnam from 1969-1971. Recently inducted into the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame, Fenderbosch continues his commitment through leadership in local veterans' organizations. The event will include dinner, recognition of veterans, and remembrance of service members who passed away this year.
🛌 Meigs County fights infant deaths with free cribs program. The local health department is providing portable cribs to families in need through their Cribs for Kids initiative. Parents receive not only the equipment but crucial education on safe sleep practices—including placing babies on their backs, avoiding bed-sharing, and keeping cribs free of blankets and toys. The program emphasizes creating smoke-free environments around infants. Eligible Meigs County residents demonstrating financial need can contact the health department to receive this potentially life-saving resource.
