Gallia County • October 15, 2025
Good morning, Gallia County. In the heart of Appalachian Ohio, a remarkable community effort is filling freezers and fighting hunger. The aptly named "Fill the Freezer" initiative has collected a staggering 33,000 pounds of locally raised meat this year alone, with our county contributing nearly 5,000 pounds of sausage to help stock regional food pantries. This innovative program creates the perfect trifecta: supporting youth agriculture, connecting communities, and addressing food insecurity across seven counties.
Traditions both new and established continue to strengthen our community bonds. Vietnam Veterans Chapter #709 recently invested in our future by awarding scholarships to promising students Madison Summers and Cooper Flinner, while the historic Bob Evans Farm Festival marked its 54th year in Rio Grande. The beloved autumn celebration brought together artisans, craftspeople, and families to enjoy everything from timber shows to sausage sampling at the very homestead where a local restaurant empire began.

🍖 Rural communities fill freezers to fight hunger across Appalachian Ohio. The "Fill the Freezer" initiative collected over 33,000 pounds of locally raised meat this year for regional food pantries, with Gallia County alone contributing nearly 5,000 pounds of sausage. Started in Perry County in 2021, the program has expanded to seven counties, connecting livestock exhibitors, fair boards, and community foundations to address food insecurity. Since its inception, the initiative has provided more than 92,000 pounds of fresh meat to families in need, helping stock some county pantries year-round. The program creates a "win-win-win" by supporting both food security and youth agriculture programs throughout the region.
🎓 Vietnam veterans honor local graduates with scholarships. The Gallia County Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter #709 recently presented financial awards to Madison Summers from South Gallia and Cooper Flinner from Gallia Academy. The scholarships support these 2025 graduates as they pursue higher education. Chapter representatives Gary Fenderbosch, Jim Cozza, and President Larry Marr were present for the ceremony. This initiative demonstrates the veterans' ongoing commitment to investing in the next generation of local students.
