Gallia County • October 6, 2025
Good morning, Gallia County. The once-unbeaten RedStorm volleyball squad has finally met its match. Indiana University Columbus snapped Rio Grande's impressive nine-game winning streak in a nail-biting five-set thriller that showcased the best of collegiate athletics—determination, resilience, and the unpredictable drama that makes sports so captivating. The 22-25, 25-18, 19-25, 26-24, 15-12 scoreline tells only part of the story of this River States Conference showdown.
While one Rio Grande streak ends, others continue to build impressively. The university is celebrating record-breaking growth across the board—from its largest-ever graduation ceremony to a remarkable fall enrollment of 2,641 students. This academic success story stands in stark contrast to nationwide post-pandemic enrollment declines. Meanwhile, Meigs County residents planning to get their flu shots on October 4 should note a venue change—the annual clinic has relocated from Pomeroy Farmers Market to the Health Department due to ongoing construction.

🎓 Rio Grande University shatters records across the board. The Ohio institution celebrated its largest-ever graduation ceremony with 435 students receiving credentials, followed by record fall enrollment of 2,641 students. Despite nationwide enrollment declines post-pandemic, Rio credits its growth to affordability initiatives, including a 25% tuition reduction and a 30% cut for nursing programs. Campus life has flourished with the return of football after 76 years, a new marching band, and an $800,000 fitness center opening in March. The university is also expanding beyond its main campus with new regional centers in Piketon and upcoming renovations in Jackson.
