Gallia County • May 20, 2025
Good morning, Gallia County. The phrase "where there's smoke, there's fire" took on a literal meaning in our region this week. Authorities have arrested 38-year-old Richard Lee Hill after he allegedly set multiple blazes at Brighter Day Ministries Church in Lesage on May 14, striking twice in the same day before confessing to investigators that he "willfully and maliciously" started the fires.
In the halls of justice, Mason County's Grand Jury has returned indictments against 19 residents on charges ranging from attempted murder to possession of child pornography. All defendants will appear before Judge Tatterson on May 28. Meanwhile, the County Commission continues addressing infrastructure needs, with updates on the $1.2 billion in broadband funding currently under federal review and confirmation that courthouse improvements remain on schedule.

π₯ Church arsonist confesses after setting multiple fires in one day. Investigators responded to the first fire at 12:16 p.m. on May 14, only to be called back hours later when multiple unconnected blazes were discovered at both the church and its fellowship hall. During questioning with fire marshals and state police, Hill admitted to "willfully and maliciously setting the fires at two separate times," according to the criminal complaint.

The May session resulted in multiple individuals facing charges ranging from attempted murder and arson to possession of child pornography. Among the most serious cases, Tyler Crump faces three counts of attempted murder and first-degree arson, while Brandon Harbaugh and Jodi Gerlach are both charged with concealment of a deceased human body. All defendants are considered innocent until proven guilty and must appear before Judge R. Craig Tatterson on May 28 for initial proceedings.
