🌨 Winter magic found

Gallia County • January 1, 2025

Good morning, Gallia County. In a stark reminder that truth is often stranger than fiction, a Christmas Eve discovery in Mason County has unfolded like a chapter from a crime drama, leading to two arrests and a community grappling with difficult questions. While this somber news weighs heavy on our hearts, it stands in sharp contrast to another kind of partnership playing out in our justice system.

Speaking of partnerships, there's something heartwarming about watching two high school friends - one who once pulled the other over for speeding - now serving side by side as our sheriff and prosecutor. And if you need a dose of pure holiday magic to lift your spirits, our City Park has transformed into a winter wonderland that's earning statewide recognition. Sometimes the brightest lights shine when we need them most.

☕️ What's Brewing Locally

⚖️ Christmas Eve body discovery leads to two arrests in Mason County. Brandon Harbaugh and Jodi Gerlach face charges after allegedly concealing Michael Phalen's body following a November altercation. According to the criminal complaint, the pair drove an unconscious Phalen to their residence, left him in a truck while they slept, and later discovered he had died. Rather than report the death, Harbaugh allegedly disposed of Phalen's body in the woods near Broad Run Road, where it remained until police discovered it following a tip. Both suspects are now being held at Western Regional Jail on $75,000 bail each.

⚖️ Two longtime friends swap oaths as sheriff and prosecutor in Ohio. Sheriff Matt Champlin and Prosecutor Jason Holdren were sworn in for their third terms during a ceremony in Gallipolis, continuing a partnership that began in 2017. Judge Eric Mulford praised both officials' contributions, particularly highlighting Holdren's enhancement of victim services and Champlin's creation of an effective law enforcement culture. Their friendship dates back to a humorous encounter when Champlin, then a deputy, pulled Holdren over for speeding in high school. The ceremony, which included swearing in their respective staff members, emphasized their continued commitment to serving Gallia County through teamwork and integrity.
