Franklin County • September 3, 2025
Good morning, Franklin County. The skyline of Columbus is changing before our eyes. With nearly 6,000 new apartment units under construction, our metropolitan area is outbuilding every other Midwest city—a concrete testament to our region's growing appeal. While we're still behind construction powerhouses like New York and Dallas, this building boom represents significant confidence in Central Ohio's future, with 71% of those new homes rising within city limits despite nationwide construction challenges.
Unfortunately, not all news reflects our community's upward trajectory. Two beloved food trucks—Galaxy Coffee and Los Agavez Taqueria—fell victim to burglaries over the weekend, though the resilient queer-owned Galaxy Coffee quickly reopened despite losing their $300 till system. Meanwhile, a high-speed chase ended dramatically when a Columbus man crashed into a tree after allegedly reaching 93 mph, resulting in multiple charges including drug possession.

🏢 Columbus outbuilds Midwest rivals with 6,000 new apartments coming. According to RentCafe, the Columbus metropolitan area leads the Midwest in apartment construction with nearly 6,000 units expected by year-end 2025. While dominating regionally, Columbus ranks just 21st nationally, far behind construction powerhouses like New York, Dallas, and Austin. Of Central Ohio's 5,719 new units, 71% will be located within Columbus city limits, with the remainder in surrounding municipalities. The national apartment construction market is experiencing a significant slowdown from 2024's record completions, hampered by high material costs, labor shortages, tariffs and deportation impacts.
🍔 Two Columbus food trucks robbed over the weekend. Galaxy Coffee and Los Agavez Taqueria were burglarized while parked on North High Street, with thieves taking cash, tips, and knives. Galaxy Coffee lost its $300 point-of-sale till system in the break-in. Despite the setback, the queer-owned coffee truck was back in business later Sunday. Both trucks typically operate just a block apart in the Columbus area.
🚔 High-speed chase ends with Columbus man crashing into tree. Andrew DeBerry, 30, was arrested after deputies clocked his Dodge Charger going 93 MPH in a 55 zone early Sunday morning. After attempting to evade law enforcement by turning into multiple driveways, DeBerry lost control of his vehicle and crashed on State Route 117. Deputies discovered an open container of alcohol and a bag containing substances that tested positive for opiates and fentanyl in his car. DeBerry now faces multiple charges including OVI, speeding, and drug possession.
