Good morning, Franklin County. Time stands still at Columbus's last historic market house on Gift Street, built in 1889 and now sitting vacant on Columbus Landmarks' endangered list. This rare piece of 19th-century civic architecture faces an uncertain future, much like the beloved local popsicle brand Rime Time—though fortunately, new owners Anique and Ali Russell have stepped in to ensure these frozen treats won't melt away from our community landscape.

While preservationists fight to save our architectural heritage, Columbus is simultaneously looking forward with innovative housing solutions. City Council member Otto Beatty is championing zoning changes that would permit backyard apartments across all residential areas, potentially offering affordable living spaces for seniors and young adults without the current tangle of expensive variances. The proposal could transform how we think about housing density in our neighborhoods, with a potential council vote coming this November.

🏛️ Columbus's last historic market house faces uncertain future. Built in 1889, the West Side Market House on Gift Street now sits vacant after being sold to Nationwide Realty Investors in 2016. The building, which later housed the Westside Boys & Girls Club, appears on Columbus Landmarks' 2025 Most Endangered Sites list alongside four other historic properties. Preservationists warn that losing this structure would erase a rare connection to the city's 19th-century civic life. Columbus Landmarks will host a bus tour of all endangered sites on August 5 to raise awareness about preservation efforts.

🍦 Columbus popsicle brand Rime Time has new owners after a decade. Founder Cody Miller sold the beloved frozen treat concept to Anique and Ali Russell, who bring years of experience in the ice pop industry. Despite the ownership change, Miller assured fans that "absolutely nothing" about the brand will change. The Russells expressed excitement about continuing to grow Rime Time, with Anique stating they "did not want to see Rime Time fade away" after Cody moves on to his next chapter.

🏠 Columbus eyes backyard apartments to tackle housing shortage. City Council member Otto Beatty is leading efforts to change zoning codes to permit accessory dwelling units (ADUs) across all residential areas. These independent living spaces could provide affordable options for seniors and young adults without requiring expensive variances. The proposed changes would allow backyard apartments up to 1,000 square feet or 65% of the main home's floor area. After a public hearing in July, the city plans another in September with potential council vote in November.
