🚶 Walking delusion

Good morning, Franklin County. Don't let those "most walkable city" headlines fool you—Columbus may have topped a reader poll in USA Today, but with a Walk Score of just 41/100, our city remains firmly in the "car-dependent" category. While charming pockets like German Village and Short North offer pedestrian-friendly experiences, Walker Evans of Columbus Underground points out what many residents already know: these walkable islands lack meaningful connections, and significant infrastructure investment is needed before Columbus can genuinely claim top-tier walkability status.

In other developments across Ohio, significant changes are underway for both teacher pensions and water infrastructure. Governor DeWine has approved a controversial budget amendment removing educator-elected seats from the State Teacher Retirement System Board, while simultaneously, $31 million in low-interest loans will flow to eight communities for critical water projects—from Waverly's waterline replacements to improved storage tanks and wastewater treatment facilities across the state.

🚶 Columbus isn't actually the 4th most walkable city in America. The Columbus Dispatch recently reported this ranking based on a USA Today reader poll, not actual walkability data. Walker Evans, co-founder of Columbus Underground, argues that while the city has walkable pockets like German Village and Short North, it lacks connectivity between these areas. Columbus scores just 41/100 on Walk Score's website, which classifies it as "car-dependent." Evans believes Columbus is improving but needs significant infrastructure investment before claiming top walkability status.

🏫 Ohio governor silences teachers on their own pension board. Governor DeWine approved a budget amendment removing four educator-elected seats from the State Teacher Retirement System Board. Critics argue this undemocratic move was sneakily inserted into the budget without teacher input or public debate. The change gives the governor more appointees while reducing representation of those most affected by the board's decisions. Teachers worry about pension transparency and their ability to track investments, with some claiming retirement funds would perform better in index funds than under current management.

💧 Ohio communities receive $31 million for water infrastructure upgrades. The Ohio Water Development Authority awarded low-interest loans to eight projects addressing aging waterlines and improving water quality across the state. The Village of Waverly in Pike County will receive $282,485 at 4.69% interest to design 7,000 feet of replacement waterline between their water treatment plant and storage tank. Other funded projects include new water storage tanks, sanitary sewer construction, and wastewater treatment plant improvements in communities from Columbus to Silver Lake. Since its creation in 1968, OWDA has provided affordable financing for public water and wastewater infrastructure throughout Ohio.
