Good morning, Franklin County. Forty years after its release, Talking Heads' "Stop Making Sense" continues to strike a chord with music lovers of all ages. At Columbus's Southern Theatre, keyboardist Jerry Harrison recently shared behind-the-scenes stories about the iconic concert film, revealing his regret that their diverse ensemble missed performing at Live Aid. The film's enduring appeal lies in capturing that electric moment when nine musicians created something magical together—with Harrison noting how even Gen Z fans are discovering the band through modern playlists.
In more sobering news, Columbus has joined other cities in challenging conditions attached to federal homelessness funding that could cost the community $1 million as local homelessness reaches record levels. Meanwhile, a tragic case has shaken the county as a mother and her boyfriend face murder charges in the death of 6-year-old Eva Bretz, who suffered fatal injuries while in their care, raising difficult questions about child welfare oversight.

🏙️ Columbus sues Trump over strings attached to homelessness funds. The city joined several communities challenging conditions placed on Housing and Urban Development grants that could cost Columbus $1 million in homelessness prevention funding. The lawsuit claims the administration's requirements regarding gender identity, immigration, abortion, and DEI programs are unconstitutional. This comes as Franklin County reports homelessness has reached an all-time high, with a 7% increase from last year. Mayor Ginther also traveled to Washington to discuss Trump's proposed budget cuts, warning they could be "devastating" for city services.
💔 A mother and boyfriend charged with murdering 6-year-old girl. Columbus police found Eva Bretz with severe injuries including a severed liver and ligature marks around her neck on April 13. Ashley Fagan and Blake Hutchinson, who were caring for the child, allegedly made false statements about what happened. Bretz died hours after being taken to the hospital, with the coroner ruling her death a homicide. Child services had previously responded to concerns about the family, but cases were closed after children were deemed safe.
