🚑 First responders first

Franklin County • March 19, 2025

Good morning, Franklin County. When first responders become patients themselves, it reminds us of the risks taken daily to keep our community safe. A Columbus police officer heading to a domestic violence call and another driver are both recovering after their Tuesday morning collision left vehicles with significant damage and deployed airbags. The incident offers a sobering glimpse into the unpredictable nature of emergency response work in our city streets.

In brighter news, excellence in healthcare shines through as five Columbus surgery centers earn national recognition from U.S. News & World Report for their exceptional outpatient procedures. The Ohio Orthopedic Surgery Institute and White Fence Surgical Suites are among those honored for successfully avoiding complications and emergency visits. Meanwhile, central Ohio's federal landscape is shifting, with seven government offices scheduled to close this summer as part of nationwide cost-cutting measures that may affect services from Social Security to FDA operations.

🏢 Elon Musk's DOGE to shutter seven federal offices in Ohio. The Department of Government Efficiency plans to terminate leases for multiple federal spaces in central Ohio this summer, including Social Security Administration and FDA offices. According to documents obtained by AP, the closures are part of a larger cost-cutting initiative affecting hundreds of federal offices nationwide. The central Ohio terminations, scheduled for August and September, are expected to save millions in lease costs. While some agencies may negotiate new leases or relocate, the rapid pace of cancellations has raised concerns about impacts on critical government services.
