Good morning, Franklin County. The soundtrack of Columbus is about to get louder as CBUS Soul® Fest expands to a two-day celebration in 2025, moving to the spacious Bicentennial Park along the Scioto Mile. This free festival will bring more live music, food vendors, and cultural celebrations to the heart of the city next August. Meanwhile, theater enthusiasts have a more immediate cultural feast awaiting them as August Wilson's masterpiece "Gem of the Ocean" makes its long-overdue Columbus debut through Trinity Theatre Company.
While the arts scene flourishes, the humanitarian landscape faces serious challenges. Local immigrant support organizations are weathering a perfect storm of federal funding cuts, with Ethiopian Tewahedo Social Services already laying off 17 employees. The ripple effects extend beyond these agencies to the 131,500 immigrants they serve and the local businesses that depend on this workforce. As one chapter of cultural celebration begins, another faces an uncertain future.

🎵 Columbus soul festival expands to two-day celebration in 2025. CBUS Soul® Fest will move from Genoa Park to the larger Bicentennial Park along the Scioto Mile, offering more space for the growing event. The free festival, scheduled for August 15-16 from 4-10 p.m., will feature live music, food vendors, and cultural celebrations highlighting Black culture. Columbus Recreation and Parks Department is currently accepting applications from food vendors and musicians, with headliners to be announced later this spring.
🎭 August Wilson masterpiece makes its Columbus debut at last. Trinity Theatre Company presents "Gem of the Ocean," the first chronological play in Wilson's celebrated 10-play cycle exploring African-American history. Director Tyrell Reggins assembled a stellar cast including Wilma Hatton as Aunt Ester for this ambitious three-hour production. The play, which explores ancestry, spirituality, and transformation, runs March 13-16 at Columbus Performing Arts Center with free admission. Reggins hopes this marks the beginning of presenting Wilson's complete cycle to Columbus audiences.
🏠 Federal cuts leave immigrant support organizations in crisis. Columbus resettlement agencies face layoffs and service reductions as funding uncertainty continues. Ethiopian Tewahedo Social Services has laid off 17 employees and incurred $500,000 in expenses without reimbursement guarantees. Meanwhile, Jewish Family Services and Community Refugee & Immigration Services are struggling to maintain operations while the city steps in with emergency rental assistance. Business leaders warn that without these services supporting Columbus' 131,500 immigrants, local companies could face significant workforce challenges.
