Good morning, Franklin County. In a powerful testament to preservation meeting progress, a landmark of civil rights history is writing its next chapter on Parkwood Avenue. The former Ohio Baptist General Association building - where leaders once gathered to condemn Emmett Till's murder - now offers 36 affordable homes while keeping its soul intact, right down to the original porch tiles that witnessed history in the making.
Across our community, transformation continues to be our constant companion. As Ohio State artists channel their creative resistance into powerful exhibitions steps from the Statehouse, and our southeast side grapples with tragic loss, Franklin County proves again that even our most challenging moments spark important conversations about who we are - and who we're striving to become.

🏛️ Historic Black Baptist headquarters gets new life as affordable housing. The former Ohio Baptist General Association building on Columbus's Parkwood Avenue, once a cornerstone of civil rights activism, has been transformed after years of restoration. The 1950s structure, which hosted NAACP meetings and condemned Emmett Till's murder, now features 36 apartment units while preserving architectural elements like original porch tiles and stained glass. Developers overcame limited historical documentation by consulting architectural experts and community memories. The renovated complex reopened in 2023 with National Historic Register status and a new motto: "Where history meets modern living."
🎨 Ohio art students fight transgender bathroom law through powerful exhibitions. Two Ohio State University MFA students, Julian Robbins and Josiah Jamison, are showcasing deeply personal artwork at Urban Arts Space in response to recent anti-trans legislation. Their exhibit, running until March 15, features digital animations, prints, and installations that challenge the erasure of transgender identities. Located steps from the Ohio Statehouse, the gallery displays works that celebrate queer resilience while confronting Senate Bill 104, which bars trans students from using their preferred bathrooms. The artists aim to demonstrate that transgender people have always been part of human history, using art to envision a more inclusive future.
