Good morning, Fayette County. After five years of careful restoration work, the 1899 B&O Depot in Leesburg is showing its true colors again—literally. The historic train station has been meticulously returned to its original red and cream exterior through an impressive community effort. With structural reinforcements complete and period details restored, this architectural gem stands ready to connect present-day residents with their railroad heritage, while fundraising shifts to transforming the interior into an accessible community space.
Speaking of community connections, mark your calendars for two upcoming gatherings. The Heritage Breakfast on November 8 offers not just pancakes and sausage but also antique appraisals and artistic demonstrations to support the depot project. Meanwhile, retired educators will want to head to Hillsboro on November 10, where crucial STRS updates await alongside lunch and a chance to contribute to the "Shop with a Cop" program—proving that even in retirement, our teachers continue investing in the community's future.

🚂 Historic train depot gets stunning makeover after five years. The Leesburg Area Historical Society has nearly completed exterior restoration of its 1899 B&O Depot, returning it to its original red and cream colors. The extensive renovation included structural reinforcement, new windows and doors, replaced siding, restored brick platforms, and new sidewalks. Funded primarily through an Ohio Facilities Construction Commission grant and numerous corporate and individual donations, the project will soon add period lighting and safety features. The society is now raising funds for interior renovations to create a handicap-accessible community space for public and private events.
🏛️ Historic depot fundraiser brings community together for breakfast and appraisals. The Leesburg Area Historical Society will host its fourth annual Heritage Breakfast on November 8, featuring pancakes, sausage, and biscuits with gravy. Attendees can have antiques appraised by Betty Ann Walker and participate in a silent auction of paintings by Bob Kroeger, who will demonstrate his techniques. While the event is free, donations are welcomed to support renovating the interior of the 1899 depot, which has already seen significant exterior restoration thanks to community support.
📚 Retired teachers to gather for crucial STRS updates in Hillsboro. The Highland County Retired Teachers' Association will meet on November 10 at the Hillsboro Church of Christ fellowship hall, with social time beginning at 11 a.m. followed by lunch at noon. STRS representative Tamla Cole will discuss health plans and major issues, while State Representative Bob Peterson will address STRS Board concerns. The $14 event will include a "Shop with a Cop" community service project, and all retired educators are welcome to attend with advance reservations.
