Good morning, Fayette County. Turning the page on illiteracy, Highland County's Altrusa International has earned well-deserved global recognition for their "Books For All Kids" initiative. The program has placed over 27,000 books in young hands since 2002, expanding from three grade levels to now reaching K-5 students countywide. This literary success story stands in stark contrast to the sobering flood damage visible at Acton Family Farms, where brown waterlines and scattered debris tell the tale of recent severe weather that forced even livestock relocations.
Some welcome financial relief has arrived at the gas pump, where South Central Ohio prices have dropped 14 cents to hit $2.99 per gallon. This local decrease outpaces the national trend, with our regional average now sitting well below the $3.13 national figure. The price break comes thanks to robust oil supplies and moderating demand – a small but meaningful economic bright spot as we navigate the season's challenges.

📚 Highland County literacy champions win prestigious international award. Altrusa International of Highland County received the Wilma B. Hogan Enduring Community Project Award for their "Books For All Kids" initiative. The project, which began in 2002, has distributed over 27,000 books to Highland County children, expanding from initially serving grades 1, 2, and 4 to now reaching students in grades K-5. Through community fundraisers, corporate sponsorships, and grants, the club has sustained this literacy effort for over two decades. The organization now plans to expand their impact by including preschoolers and supporting 6th grade teachers with literacy materials.
🌧️ Ohio farm devastated by recent flooding shows visible scars. Photos from Acton Family Farms in Frankfort reveal the aftermath of severe flooding that damaged cornfields and threatened livestock. Brown lines mark flood levels throughout the property, with debris scattered along pathways. The flooding rose high enough that pigs had to be moved from their shelter for safety. Brice Acton, pictured walking through sheep and pig pens, points out numerous areas affected by the water damage.
⛽ South Central Ohio gas prices plummet 14 cents to $2.99 per gallon. The drop comes as national averages decreased slightly to $3.13, reflecting abundant oil supply as OPEC+ continues boosting production. Crude oil prices remain stable in the mid-$60s per barrel, while U.S. gasoline demand decreased to 9.04 million barrels per day. Today's national average is 31 cents lower than this time last year, with prices varying across South Central Ohio communities from $2.64 in Columbiana to $3.19 in Athens.
