Fayette County • August 5, 2025
Good morning, Fayette County. All aboard for economic opportunity! Ohio's passenger rail dreams connecting Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, and Dayton have completed initial analysis, but face political roadblocks despite potential metropolitan benefits. The conversation continues as representatives from MORPC, All Aboard Ohio, and Amtrak recently gathered to discuss bringing this long-awaited service to life—potentially transforming how we connect across the state.
In brighter financial news, Ohio employers are enjoying historically low workers' compensation rates, with public employers potentially saving $1.8 million annually from a proposed 1% reduction. This follows a 6% decrease for private employers that already saved them $60 million. Meanwhile, our community mourns beloved agricultural educator Randy Roush, whose 33-year teaching career and community service left an indelible mark on generations of students at Whiteoak High School before his passing at 73.

🚆 Ohio's passenger rail plans face political roadblocks. Connecting Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, and Dayton by rail could deliver economic benefits to these metropolitan areas. The Ohio Rail Development Commission has completed initial analysis for the proposed passenger service. However, some Ohio lawmakers are threatening to derail these long-discussed plans. Representatives from MORPC, All Aboard Ohio, and Amtrak recently discussed the latest updates on rail passenger service in the state.
🍎 Beloved ag teacher Randy Roush leaves lasting legacy at 73. The Lynchburg resident dedicated 33 years to vocational agriculture education, primarily at Whiteoak High School in Mowrystown. Beyond teaching, Roush served as a Junior Fair Board member, camp counselor, and remained active in his community after retirement. The University of Kentucky graduate was passionate about sports, woodworking, and attending concerts, but family remained his cornerstone. A celebration of life will be held August 16 at Lynchburg-Clay Middle School.
💰 Ohio workers' comp rates keep falling for public employers. The Bureau of Workers' Compensation is considering a 1% rate reduction that would save public employers $1.8 million annually starting January 2026. This follows a recent 6% decrease for private employers that saved them $60 million. Administrator Stephanie McCloud noted these reductions create "a low and steady rate environment" at Governor DeWine's request. Current rate levels for Ohio's 258,000 employers are at their lowest in over 60 years, with BWC managing approximately $23 billion in assets.
