🚂 Railway revolution

Good morning, Fayette County. The legacy of heroism runs deep in our community's soil. From Civil War Medal of Honor recipient Corporal Henry Casey, whose bravery at Vicksburg was honored during Bloomingburg's Memorial Day tribute, to Jean West Henson, whose 86 years of life bloomed with devotion to family, gardening, and—delightfully—Elvis Presley. These stories remind us that extraordinary lives often flourish in ordinary places, leaving imprints that span generations.

Meanwhile, safety improvements are coming down the tracks for Washington Court House. A $420,315 upgrade will transform the South North Street rail crossing with new gates and flashing lights by early 2026, part of Ohio's broader $1.2 million investment in reducing train-vehicle accidents. The initiative has already shown remarkable results, with incidents dropping from 356 in 1990 to just 77 last year—proof that sometimes the most meaningful community progress happens at the crossroads of planning and prevention.

🚂 Ohio invests $1.2 million to make deadly rail crossings safer. Washington Court House will receive a $420,315 upgrade to install flashing lights, gates, and surface reconstruction at the South North Street crossing by February 2026. The project is part of a broader initiative that includes similar safety enhancements in Wyandot and Washington counties, all funded by federal grants. Local governments can apply for up to $5,000 per project for additional improvements like rumble strips or signage. These ongoing safety efforts have dramatically reduced train-vehicle crashes in Ohio from 356 in 1990 to just 77 in 2023.

🎖️ Civil War hero honored in small-town Memorial Day tribute. The Bloomingburg Lodge 449 Free and Accepted Masons conducted their annual Memorial Day service in Ohio, with Wayne King serving as master of ceremonies. Local historian Robert Russell delivered an address highlighting Medal of Honor recipient Corporal Henry Casey, who served as the lodge's treasurer for 49 years after his heroic actions during the 1863 Vicksburg siege. Members of the Henry Casey Camp 92 Sons of Union Veterans fired a traditional military salute while lodge members placed a wreath at the unknown soldier memorial. The ceremony honored both Casey's legacy and all fallen soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice.
