Fairfield County • October 22, 2025
Good morning, Fairfield County. Imagine trying to run, swim, or simply walk confidently with a prosthetic limb that can't get wet or withstand athletic activity. That's the reality for many of the 250,000 Ohioans who've lost limbs, but a bipartisan push at the Statehouse aims to change that. The "So Every Body Can Move" initiative would require insurers to cover advanced prosthetics that allow recipients to fully participate in life's activities—joining similar laws in about a dozen states that have made mobility more accessible without significantly increasing insurance costs.
Meanwhile, local hikers might be inspired by Waynesville resident Sarah Howard, who recently joined an elite club of just 200 people who've conquered all 1,444 miles of the Buckeye Trail. Closer to home, the Fairfield County Recorder's Office is implementing a $5 increase to document recording fees, bringing the standard cost to $39. The additional funds will support digital preservation efforts mandated by state law, ensuring land records dating back to 1980 are electronically accessible by 2026.

🦿 Ohio lawmakers fight for insurance to cover advanced prosthetics. A bipartisan bill would require health insurers to pay for high-quality prosthetic devices for 250,000 Ohioans who have lost limbs. Representatives Dontavius Jarrells and Jean Schmidt are sponsoring legislation to ensure coverage of medically necessary prosthetics that allow recipients to participate in athletics and get wet, unlike many current devices. The "So Every Body Can Move" initiative mirrors laws passed in about a dozen states without significantly increasing insurance costs. Supporters argue that mobility devices provide independence and enable physical activity that improves cardiovascular health, mental health, and social connection.
📄 Fairfield County adds $5 fee to record land documents. The county's Recorder's Office is increasing its standard recording fee from $34 to $39 to fund digital preservation efforts. This change stems from Ohio Senate Bill 94, which requires counties to digitize land records dating back to 1980 and make them electronically accessible by June 2026. While not mandatory for all Ohio counties, Fairfield County has opted to implement the preservation surcharge to enhance its digital recording, scanning, and indexing capabilities. The fee will help maintain land records through a secure website for public access.
🥾 Ohio hiker joins elite group of Buckeye Trail conquerors. Sarah Howard recently completed a five-year section-hike of Ohio's longest trail, covering all 1,444 miles of the Buckeye Trail. The 46-year-old Waynesville resident finished her journey on October 13 at Headlands Beach State Park, becoming one of only about 200 hikers to complete the entire trail. Howard tackled the trail in sections of varying lengths, hiking through extreme weather conditions and alongside 25-30 different companions throughout her adventure. "The hiking community is just lovely," said Howard, who encourages others to attempt the trail marked by its distinctive blue blazes.
