Good morning, Dublin. As temperatures climb into the 90s today, Central Ohio faces a double challenge with air quality concerns looming. The forecasted Air Quality Index of 101 puts vulnerable groups—including children, seniors, and those with respiratory conditions—at particular risk. Health officials recommend scheduling any outdoor activities during the morning hours when conditions may be more favorable for those sensitive to poor air quality.

Meanwhile, Columbus is taking significant steps to address two pressing community needs. A $2 million investment will transform a vacant South Side church into a haven for homeless youth and fund critical repairs at a 176-unit Blacklick apartment complex. On the housing innovation front, proposed legislation aims to simplify the construction of in-law suites and accessory dwelling units on single-family properties—potentially offering new solutions for multigenerational families or creating additional rental options amid the region's housing challenges.

🏠 Columbus aims to simplify in-law suite construction for homeowners. Councilmember Otto Beatty's proposed legislation would make it easier to build accessory dwelling units (ADUs) on single-family properties, removing cumbersome permit processes that have limited their development. These separate living spaces—ranging from detached structures to basement apartments—could help address housing shortages while providing options for aging parents, family members, or potential renters. The proposal includes reasonable restrictions on height, size, and quantity to maintain neighborhood standards. Several other Ohio cities have already relaxed similar regulations with positive results.

🌫️ Central Ohio braces for dangerous air quality on Wednesday. The Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission has issued an alert as the Air Quality Index is forecasted to reach 101, considered "Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups." A high-pressure ridge combined with 90°F temperatures and lingering smoke will hamper atmospheric mixing and enhance ozone formation. Health officials warn that active children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions like asthma and COPD are most vulnerable during this event. Sensitive groups are advised to limit outdoor activities or schedule them for morning hours when conditions may be better.

🏠 Columbus invests $2 million to tackle housing and homelessness challenges. The City Council approved two $1 million funding packages for critical community projects. Star House will transform the vacant St. Ladislas church into a second drop-in center for homeless youth, having purchased the South Side property for $1.18 million. Meanwhile, Preservation of Affordable Housing will complete "urgent repairs" at Walnut Grove, a 176-unit apartment complex in Blacklick. Council President Shannon Hardin emphasized the importance of these investments, stating "Every kid in Columbus should be sleeping in a bed not out on the sidewalk."
