🧪 Chemical quiet revolution

Good morning, Dublin. Columbus's scientific legacy runs deeper than most realize. Since 1909, Chemical Abstracts Service has been quietly revolutionizing how the world accesses scientific knowledge from its headquarters just north of OSU. What began with paper records evolved into the groundbreaking SciFinder software in 1995, and recently culminated in the release of nearly half a million chemical registry numbers under an open license—a gift to educators and researchers worldwide.

In other developments around town, an unusual political chess move is unfolding on Ohio's Supreme Court, where Justice Pat Fischer reportedly plans to sidestep retirement age restrictions by running for a colleague's seat. Meanwhile, for those seeking community rather than controversy, local retired public employees have a more straightforward gathering planned—lunch at Golden Corral on May 20th with the Richland Area Chamber's CEO as guest speaker. Sometimes the simplest connections remain the most meaningful.

🧪 Columbus has been a chemistry powerhouse since 1909. Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS), founded in 1907, has been analyzing and curating scientific information from its Columbus base for over 115 years. The organization moved from the University of Illinois to Ohio State University in 1909, later establishing its own campus north of OSU in 1965 where it also installed its first computer center. CAS revolutionized scientific access with the 1995 launch of SciFinder software, allowing chemists to search databases from personal computers. In 2022, CAS released nearly 500,000 registry numbers under an open license, expanding access to chemical information for educators and researchers.

⚖️ Ohio justice plots to bypass retirement age with colleague's seat. Justice Pat Fischer reportedly informed Democratic Justice Jennifer Brunner he plans to run for her Ohio Supreme Court seat in 2026. The controversial move would allow the 67-year-old Republican to circumvent the state's judicial age limit of 70, which would otherwise end his career. Critics called it a "sleazy" power grab that could eliminate the court's only Democratic voice, as Governor DeWine would appoint a Republican replacement to Fischer's vacated position. Podcast hosts suggested reform requiring elected officials to resign before seeking another position.
