Dublin • April 16, 2025
Good morning, Dublin. The legal system rarely offers simple stories, as evidenced by the Ohio Supreme Court's firm rejection of Felix Brown's appeal in a 1995 murder case. After serving nearly three decades for killing Monica Brandon, the 65-year-old's path to potential freedom remains blocked until at least December 2027βa stark reminder that justice, while sometimes slow, eventually catches up. Meanwhile, Columbus's NAACP leadership dispute appears to be moving toward reconciliation as both sides work to resolve their differences outside the courtroom.
Retail revival brings welcome news for bargain hunters as five central Ohio Big Lots stores prepare to reopen their doors. The Reynoldsburg location leads the charge on May 1, with Columbus, Grove City, and Lancaster locations following mid-month. This resurrection comes courtesy of Variety Wholesalers, which scooped up 219 locations after Big Lots' bankruptcy filing last fallβbreathing new life into a familiar shopping destination.

βοΈ Ohio court slams door on convicted murderer's appeal for new trial. The Ohio Supreme Court has rejected 65-year-old Felix Brown's request to overturn his conviction in the 1995 murder of Monica Brandon. Brown, serving an 18-year-to-life sentence, shot Brandon in the forehead after becoming angry she was dating other men. He initially claimed the shooting was accidental and falsely told 911 that robbers were responsible. Brown, who had been previously imprisoned four times, will not be eligible for parole until December 2027.
βοΈ NAACP leadership battle heads toward out-of-court resolution in Columbus. Former branch president Nana Watson sued to stop an election after the national organization removed her from leadership last year. A judge temporarily paused the election while both sides work on resolving their conflict outside court. The dispute centers around allegations about Watson's handling of membership dues and an Athens County branch organization, claims she disputes in her lawsuit. The hearing has been delayed until June, with branch vice president Joel King currently serving as acting president.
