Good morning, Dev Test County. After 12 years of tireless advocacy, Mary Wilonsky is closing the book on her remarkable career with Friends of the Dallas Public Library. Her legacy includes nearly $12 million in secured funding, expanded operating hours across 30 branches, and a membership that doubled under her watch—all while convincingly arguing that libraries remain vital in the digital age. As she prepares to step down July 15, Dallas readers owe her a debt of gratitude for keeping our literary landscape thriving.

The local culinary scene is heating up faster than a Texas sidewalk in July. While El Rancho Supermercado unveils renovations and Taco Y Vino expands to Garland, newcomers like Paris Baguette and Swig are setting up shop across the metroplex. Meanwhile, summer menus are bringing seasonal delights from JOA Grill's craft cocktails to Shake Shack's Dubai chocolate pistachio shake—perfect refreshment as Dallas police leadership faces tough questions about immigration enforcement policies.

☕️ What's Brewing Locally

📚 Mary Wilonsky transformed Dallas libraries during her 12-year career. As executive director of Friends of the Dallas Public Library, she advocated for expanded library services and helped secure nearly $12 million in funding for the system's 30 branches. Her "Open Libraries Unlock Potential Campaign" successfully restored library budgets to allow six and seven-day operations across the city. Despite infrastructure challenges, Wilonsky helped grow the nonprofit from 300 to 600 members while countering arguments that libraries were becoming obsolete. After making a significant impact on Dallas's literary landscape, she's stepping down from her role on July 15.

🚔 Dallas police chief faces scrutiny over potential ICE collaboration. Community Police Oversight Board member Brandon Friedman publicly challenged Chief Daniel Comeaux's willingness to work with immigration authorities amid increased federal enforcement. Comeaux's statement about working "shoulder-to-shoulder" with federal partners alarmed Friedman, who cited ICE's documented pattern of "brutality, cruelty and lawlessness." When board members attempted to question Comeaux directly, the City Attorney's Office intervened to block the discussion. Friedman argues DPD's primary responsibility is protecting all Dallas residents, not assisting federal immigration enforcement.
