🌉 Bridging the gap

Dev Test County • January 20, 2025

Good morning, Dev Test County. As we mark another milestone in our community's journey toward Dr. King's dream, Lawrence "Mac" Cunningham's historic mayorship of Windham reminds us that progress isn't just about breaking barriers – it's about building bridges. His powerful keynote at the NAACP's Prayer Breakfast echoed through Kent United Church of Christ, carrying forward both celebration and challenge in equal measure.

Meanwhile, our county continues to reflect America's fascinating political contrasts. As Mike Berger and his son pack their bags for Washington's inaugural festivities, just up the tracks, Cleveland's scenic railway dreams are hitting some expensive bumps. CSX's $194.1 million price tag for new infrastructure is giving everyone a stark reminder that even the most promising plans sometimes need to switch to a different track.

☕️ What's Brewing Locally

✊ Historic first Black mayor of Portage County champions MLK's enduring dream. Lawrence "Mac" Cunningham delivered a powerful keynote at the county NAACP's annual Martin Luther King Jr. Prayer Breakfast, reflecting on his groundbreaking election as Windham's mayor. Speaking at Kent United Church of Christ, Cunningham emphasized both the progress made and challenges ahead in achieving King's vision of equality. He called on attendees to address persistent disparities in education, housing, healthcare, and criminal justice. The event included prayers from local clergy, musical performances, and tributes to community leaders, including the late President Jimmy Carter.

🚂 CSX's costly demands derail plans for Cleveland's scenic railway extension. The freight railroad's requirement for new tracks and an advanced control system inflated the project's cost to a staggering $194.1 million, making the downtown Cleveland extension unfeasible. The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad hoped to extend service 9 miles north from Independence to downtown Cleveland, potentially providing educational opportunities for Cleveland students and park access for lower-income residents. NOACA's study team hasn't given up hope, suggesting alternatives like track-sharing agreements or CSX selling their right of way. However, CSX's lack of participation and concerns about station locations continue to challenge the project's viability.
