🎓 Howland College student faces rare cancer diagnosis. Max Moriarty, a junior at Kent State University, has been diagnosed with Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Tumors, a rare form of cancer affecting only a couple hundred individuals in the past three decades. The unexpected diagnosis came during routine appointments after returning home for fall break, and Max has since been juggling weekly radiation treatments and medical visits. His family is feeling the strain, as they can't work while focusing on his care, but they’re finding encouragement through community support, including efforts from his fraternity that raised over $20,000 in just 18 hours. With hopes for potential surgery in early 2025, the Moriarty family is optimistic and taking it one day at a time.
🎄 Hudson’s beloved Christkindlmarkt makes its festive return this weekend, lighting up the Clocktower Green from Friday through Sunday for its 37th year. Organized by the Hudson-Landsberg Sister City group, this charming German Christmas market aims to capture the essence of traditional European festivities with 28 unique gift vendors and eight tempting food stalls featuring German fare like roasted meats and potato pancakes. The event welcomes guests of all ages, offering delightful activities such as storytelling, arts and crafts, and even a market-wide scavenger hunt for children. Plus, visitors can enjoy festive beverages including a special Krampus Ale brewed just for the occasion. With free admission, the Christkindlmarkt is all set to sprinkle gemutlichkeit throughout the community while supporting educational initiatives.
🌳 Shaker Heights scales back Doan Brook restoration project. City officials have proposed some cuts to the Doan Brook restoration near Horseshoe Lake Park, aiming to save approximately $1.7 million on the $14 million project. Plans to include pollinator gardens, a new trail, and a commemorative site have been scrapped, while the city will also opt for less expensive materials for other features. With construction slated to begin in 2027, the updated plans will reduce Shaker Heights' share of the costs from $8.8 million to $4.6 million, a move that has garnered support from local leaders. As Councilman Sean Malone pointed out, this could be an excellent starting point for future enhancements to what he calls "one of the jewels of Shaker Heights."
