Darke County • October 31, 2025
Good morning, Darke County. Ohio is about to get a little greener as all 88 counties participate in the historic "Heritage Trees" initiative. The statewide planting program will bring a native Swamp White Oak to Auglaize County on November 3, with ceremonies continuing across the state through 2026 — a living legacy that will provide shade for generations to come.
Meanwhile, compassion blooms locally despite financial challenges. Darke County's domestic violence shelter continues its vital work through community support after being denied state grants for a second year. The shelter, which has already served 324 cases in 2025, recently brought together local officials to strengthen collaborative efforts against domestic violence. And for those seeking connection of a different kind, the county's first "Evening on the Prairie" delighted couples with music, food, and illuminated hikes — a starlit success that organizers have already committed to making an annual tradition.

🌳 Ohio's 88 counties get new trees in historic planting initiative. Auglaize County will participate in the "Heritage Trees: Planting History" program with a ceremony on November 3 at the county fairgrounds. A native Swamp White Oak will be planted during the 1 p.m. event, which is open to the public. The fairgrounds location was selected to represent the entire county and provide shade benefits for future generations. The statewide program, which began in Lima on Arbor Day, will continue planting trees across all Ohio counties through 2026.
🛡️ Darke County's domestic violence shelter fights funding cuts with community support. Annie Sonner, coordinator for 35 years, reported serving 324 domestic violence cases and housing 34 women and children in 2025 so far. Local officials, including the prosecutor, sheriff, and judge, gathered at a fundraiser to discuss their collaborative efforts against domestic violence in the community. Judge Monnin highlighted the court's 26-week intervention program designed to break cycles of violence, while Victim Advocate Jennifer Webb explained how Marsy's Law ensures victims' rights to be heard. After being denied state grants for the second year, the shelter is actively seeking donations and new board members to continue their essential services.
