Cuyahoga County • September 1, 2025
Good morning, Cuyahoga County. The historic church on Larchmere Boulevard is about to be reborn as Cleveland's premier Brazilian dining destination. After two years of meticulous renovation, Batuqui's owners are trading their cozy Victorian space for a stunning 1922 church that will expand their seating capacity nearly fivefold. While the location changes, fans can breathe easy knowing their beloved cheese bread and feijoada aren't going anywhere when the restaurant reopens September 2nd.
Meanwhile, community healing takes different forms across our city this week. In Public Square, activists are fighting the overdose crisis through education and support, working to reduce stigma and connect grieving families. Tragically, Maple Heights faces its own healing journey after a Saturday night shooting left one boy dead and two others injured, with police now seeking information as their investigation continues.

🍽️ Brazilian gem Batuqui moves to historic church on Larchmere. After a two-year renovation, owners Carla Batista and Gustavo Nogueira are relocating their beloved restaurant from a cozy Victorian to a stunning former church built in 1922. The new space dramatically increases capacity from just 38 seats to approximately 180 across multiple dining areas, while maintaining fan favorites like Brazilian cheese bread and feijoada. A lower-level dining room features its own bar and a small retail shop selling Brazilian imports, reminiscent of the owners' former Ipanema Market. The restaurant closes at its current location August 31st and reopens in its new home September 2nd.
💔 Cleveland activists fight overdose deaths through community healing events. Advocates gathered in Public Square to honor those lost to drug overdoses while providing resources and support. The event, organized by the MILES group and Project White Butterfly, offered educational materials and healing activities for grieving families. Despite recent decreases in Ohio's overdose fatalities, fentanyl remains involved in 78% of these deaths. Organizers emphasize the importance of community connection in battling addiction stigma and preventing future tragedies.
