🚒 Smoke signals

Good morning, Cuyahoga County. Thick black smoke billows over Broadway-Slavic Village today as Cleveland firefighters battle a four-alarm industrial blaze that's jumping from building to building. Crews are rotating shifts in the punishing heat while tackling water supply challenges, a stark reminder of the dangers our first responders face daily. Meanwhile, in a laboratory across town, Case Western Reserve chemist Divita Mathur is working with something much smaller but equally powerful – DNA nanoparticles that could revolutionize gene therapy by delivering corrective genes to precisely targeted cells.

A historic Lakewood landmark has found new purpose after a surprising bidding war. The former Franklin School building sold for $775,000 – nearly triple its asking price – to Inner Peace Cleveland, a nonprofit serving adults with disabilities. The organization plans to transform the 29,000-square-foot structure into a center for life skills training while preserving its architectural character, though questions remain about the fate of the adjacent park space that neighbors have long treasured.

🧬 DNA nanoparticles could revolutionize gene therapy delivery. Case Western Reserve University chemist Divita Mathur received a prestigious NSF CAREER Award to study how synthetic DNA nanoparticles behave inside cells. These highly programmable particles could potentially deliver corrective genes to specific cells, addressing a critical challenge in treating genetic diseases. Mathur will track fluorescent-tagged nanoparticles under microscopes to understand their cellular interactions before developing therapeutic applications. The grant also funds her work engaging high school students in chemistry research and creating 3D molecular models.

🏫 Historic Lakewood school building sells for nearly triple the asking price. Inner Peace Cleveland, a nonprofit serving adults with disabilities, purchased the former Franklin School for $775,000 at public auction.
