Cuyahoga County • June 19, 2025
Good morning, Cuyahoga County. Cleveland's history is stepping out of the archives and into the streets this month as Cleveland History Days returns for its 8th year. From June 19-29, the city transforms into a living museum with over 70 events spanning bicycle tours, pub crawls, and cemetery visits. Even lifelong residents find themselves discovering hidden stories behind familiar landmarks, proving that sometimes the most fascinating journeys happen right in our own backyard.
Beyond our local heritage celebrations, Cuyahoga County's influence extends far and wide. University Heights native Ari Bar-Shain has found his calling supporting religious lone soldiers in Israel, while Cleveland prepares to welcome changemakers from across the nation as host of the 2025 National Urban League Conference. This six-day gathering will bring together leaders, innovators, and policy makers next July, blending civil rights advocacy with a touch of Rock & Roll Hall of Fame flair in true Cleveland fashion.

🏛️ Cleveland's past comes alive in 11-day history celebration. Cleveland History Days returns for its 8th year, featuring over 70 events from June 19-29 across the city. Organized by Canalway and more than 30 partner organizations, the festival includes bicycle tours, pub crawls, cemetery visits, and guided walks through historic neighborhoods. Even lifelong residents discover something new while exploring landmarks like Erie Street Cemetery and Veterans Memorial Bridge. The celebration aims to promote cultural tourism and share diverse stories about Cleveland's rich heritage.
🕍 From Cleveland to IDF: Ari Bar-Shain supports religious lone soldiers. The 28-year-old University Heights native moved to Israel at 17, serving as a combat soldier and officer in the Givati Brigade before finding his calling with Tzalash. Now married to an Israeli, Bar-Shain runs a WhatsApp group of over 200 religious lone soldiers while maintaining personal connections with about 75 of them. He travels across Israel to provide Torah classes, one-on-one conversations, and emotional support, continuing his mission even while serving in reserves after October 7. "It's not just about logistics, it's about the soul," explains Bar-Shain, who understands firsthand the loneliness these soldiers experience.
🏙️ Cleveland will host the nation's largest civil rights conference next year. The National Urban League's 2025 Annual Conference will bring together changemakers, innovators, and leaders from July 14-19 for a week of strategy and service. This six-day event will feature a diverse lineup including the State of the Urban League Address, career fairs, youth leadership summits, and small business workshops. The hybrid format ensures widespread access, while special events like "Urban League Live" will honor Cleveland's Rock & Roll Hall of Fame legacy. With participation from policymakers, business executives, and cultural influencers, the conference represents a significant moment in the ongoing fight for equity.
