Cuyahoga County • May 19, 2025
Good morning, Cuyahoga County. A century of wheels in motion marks a significant milestone as Cleveland's buses celebrate 100 years of connecting our community. What began with a single double-decker in 1925 has evolved into today's RTA system that provides over 20 million rides annually—a century-long journey of innovation that has fundamentally shaped how Clevelanders access jobs, healthcare, and each other.
Meanwhile, opportunity laps at our shores with 1,000 acres of untapped lakefront potential waiting to be transformed into vibrant, accessible spaces similar to Chicago and Toronto's waterfront successes. On the cultural front, Cleveland's own Durand Bernarr returns home triumphant, bringing his Grammy-nominated talents and "You Gon' Grow Too" tour back to the city that helped shape his distinctive sound and identity as an independent artist making waves without major label backing.

🚌 Cleveland's buses have been rolling for a century. What began with a late double-decker in 1925 evolved from Cleveland Railway Co. to Cleveland Transit System (CTS) and finally to the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (RTA) in 1975. The system saw historic changes including public ownership during WWII, revolutionary funding through a 1975 sales tax, and continuous innovations in accessibility and fuel technology. Today, RTA serves over 20 million rides annually, connecting Clevelanders to jobs, healthcare, and community for 100 years.
🌊 Cleveland sits on 1,000 acres of untapped lakefront potential. The city owns vast stretches of Lake Erie shoreline that remain inaccessible to the public and underutilized for development. A Harvard/MIT student team recently won a competition with a $1.1 billion mixed-use development plan for just one 62-acre lakefront site, showing what's possible. Extending the Waterfront Line light rail and transforming publicly owned parcels could create vibrant neighborhoods with housing, retail, and recreation similar to successful lakefronts in Chicago, Toronto, and Milwaukee. Cleveland literally owns its opportunity to transform its waterfront—it just needs the will to act.
🎵 Ohio's own Durand Bernarr returns home triumphant with Grammy nomination. The 36-year-old independent R&B artist recently performed in Cleveland as part of his "You Gon' Grow Too" tour, supporting his latest album BLOOM. Bernarr, who received his first Grammy nomination this year for his EP "En Route," proudly embraces his identity as "Black, not straight" while making his mark in the industry without major label backing. His music, influenced by his musical parents (both in attendance at his Cleveland show), explores themes of self-awareness, vulnerability and emotional growth through therapy and self-work.
